Myths vs. Facts: Seven Car Wash Misconceptions

Washing your car is not only for the looks- it’s also a critical part of your vehicle’s maintenance. When it’s that time again to head to the car wash, you may have several questions about where to go and what kind of wash is best for your car. However, there are several car wash industry myths that can leave your car looking lackluster. Here are seven common misconceptions about car washes and the real facts behind them.

When it rains, that’s good enough to use as a car wash

Rain water is not clean water. On the surface, rain does seem to remove mud and dirt- but it can leave your vehicle covered in rain spots. However, it cannot remove stuck on bugs, grime, or other substances picked up from the road. Rain water can also be acidic, especially in cities or high-traffic areas. Acid rain can cause damage to your car’s paint over time. If it rains, you should head to your nearest car wash as soon as possible.

I can’t clean an electric car in an automatic car wash

Logically, when you think of electricity and water, you think danger. In reality, washing an electric car in an automatic car wash is completely safe. It will not damage the electric system, batteries or motor. Electric cars are put through rigorous testing before being put on the market, including testing their ability to withstand water. If you have an electric vehicle, there’s no preparation you need in order to take it through an automatic car was- just treat it like any other vehicle.

Express car washes can cause scratches and damage

Our modern technology provides a gentle touch to all vehicles that enter the tunnel. At Caliber, we use gentler, softer equipment, to give you the best experience possible and make sure your car is protected. In fact, there’s actually a chance you could scratch a vehicle on your own if you hand wash incorrectly. Interested in learning more? Check out our tunnel video series.

Your wash packages are all the same- so it doesn’t matter which one I choose

All of our wash packages at Caliber are good choices but they are not all the same! Our Classic Wash is convenient if you need a basic clean. It includes a wash and dry and you’ll be out in a matter of minutes. If you want to upgrade, our Custom Wash includes underbody wash and wheel cleaning. Our top Caliber Wash includes it all- and more. With the top wash, you get Caliber wax and tire shine on top of everything else included with the other washes. Don’t forget, our Caliber wash also includes our Caliber Ceramic Coating for extra protection.

Automatic car washes are bad for the environment

Our automatic wash actually uses less water than washing a car at home or in a self-service car wash. All of the water used in our washes is filtered, cleaned, and reused. On average, we are able to use 30 gallons of water per wash, while other types of hand washes use around 140 gallons per wash. Pressurized systems require far less water than the low pressure water hoses used at home. All of our cleaning chemicals are also completely biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Being eco-friendly is a top priority at Caliber. In fact, last year, our customers saved around 14 million gallons of water!

I don’t need to wash my car that often

Washing your car might not be at the top of your to-do list- but it’s far more crucial to your car’s overall health than you might realize. Your ride is a huge investment and taking care of it protects its resale value and keeps it running its best. Regularly washing your car is an easy way to protect your investment. When dirt, debris, and grime build up over long periods of time, it can cause paint corrosion and other issues. How often should you wash your car? It depends on a few different factors including where you live, what time of the year it is, and how often you drive. A good rule of thumb is every week or every other week.

My car is shiny, so that means it’s clean

Just because your car looks shiny doesn’t mean it’s actually clean. The best inspection you can do to test vehicle cleanliness is by touching it. If you run your fingers across the surface of your car, you might be surprised by how much dirt is on the surface. Looks can be deceiving, and even if your car’s exterior is gleaming, it could still need a washing.

Whether you’re a car cleaning newbie or a seasoned pro, don’t fall prey to these common car wash misconceptions! If you have further questions about automatic car washes, don’t hesitate to contact your local Caliber and ask for a manager- they can help!

Meet Palatka Manager Lilly

Caturday has nothing on THIS feline-loving local.

Palatka manager Lilly joined Caliber Car Wash in August of 2020 and quickly worked her way up to site manager at the beginning of 2021.

Originally from Tennessee, Lilly considers herself a Putnam County native as she moved to Palatka when she was young. While attending Peniel High School, Lilly was part of the softball team and has experience playing every position- except pitching!

In her spare time, you can catch Lilly at the beach with her friends, taking pictures or hanging out with her four cats- Lucky, Kai, Waldo, and Binx. All of Lilly’s cats are rescues, and she has a passion for saving animals.

Pet-Cleaning Tip: Those fur babies know how to shed some fur! Try using a brush to remove it. Simply  brush against carpet grain to loosen fur before vacuuming it up. If that doesn’t work, brush all the fur to one side, then let the vacuum take care of the rest!

When it comes to Caliber, Lilly says her favorite part is working with and meeting customers. She loves being able to create community relationships and does her best to make sure you leave with a smile on your face.

The employees at Caliber are a close-knit family, according to Lilly who also loves being able to work with people she enjoys. She hopes you’ll feel that comradery while you’re getting your vehicle cleaned as she strives to provide that Caliber clean with a smile!

What to Expect When You Visit Caliber Car Wash

Let’s face it- no one wants to drive around in a dirty car. Dirt, debris, pollen, and bugs can leave even brand-new cars looking lackluster. When you realize your vehicle is ready for a top-notch cleaning, it’s time to head to your local Caliber Car Wash.

We always want to make sure our customers leave with a smile on their face and a sparkle on their car. Here’s everything you need to know about what you will experience when you visit one of our car washes.

Pay Station

When you first arrive at Caliber Car Wash, there are 2-3 pay station lane options. One lane is a “Members Only” lane, which is reserved for our Limitless members. The remaining lanes are for any customers who are not members. Not sure which lane is which? You’ll see a sign hanging above the pay stations.

And we hope you’ll be able to pull up stress-free as a Caliber employee will be stationed to help guide you through the process of choosing a wash level and taking your payment once you reach the pay stations.

Washes

Other washes tend to inundate you with multiple options and add-ons, but here at Caliber, we like to keep things simple. We offer three washes – each are catered to different needs.

If you’re looking for the ultimate wash with the industry’s newest protectant coating, try our Caliber Wash. In addition to getting better paint protection with our Caliber Ceramic Coating, your vehicle will receive an underbody wash, wheel clean, Caliber wax, and tire shine. On average, our competitors charge $10-20 more for a similar wash with ceramic coating.

If you’re looking for a great clean but want to skip out on the tire shine, our Custom Wash is right for you. For $18, you’ll receive an underbody wash, wheel clean, paint protectant, and a spot free rinse. On average, our competitors charge $20 for this wash and don’t include all the detailing freebies, but we’ve got you covered.

Last, we have our tried-and-true Classic Wash. If you’re in a hurry and need a quick wash to get off last night’s rain or dirt, consider this wash. It’s a simple clean-and-dry without any fuss.

Still not sure which wash is right for you? Our team members can answer any questions you have.

Limitless Plans

Wondering what monthly car wash plans are all about? Our team members are stationed at the pay station to answer questions and help you sign up for a monthly Limitless plan, which allows you to wash your vehicle an unlimited number of times all month long for one low price. If you wash your vehicle more than once a month, you’ll save $10+ a month by going Limitless. In fact, on average, our Limitless members save $20-40 a month by going Limitless.

Want to try our wash out first? No worries! You can also sign up in the lobby after your wash. Just stop by, and our team members can assist you.

Helpful Tip: Share your phone number to receive more information on how your Limitless membership works and so we can look your account up quicker if you ever need to make adjustments.

Before Entering the Wash

After you decide which wash is best for you, it’s time for that cleaning action! Here, one of our Caliber employees will guide your vehicle into the tunnel. If you have a truck, please do one last check to make sure you don’t have loose items in your truck bed that may fly out and damage your vehicle. We’re all about safety, so lock it down, so it doesn’t smack around!

As you head to the tunnel, a Caliber team member will guide you onto the wash track. Once you’re on, they will ask you to put your car in neutral, take your feet off the pedals, and take your hands off the steering wheel. Once you’ve done this, you can sit back and relax while the car wash does the rest of the work.

Once you’re relaxing with your car in neutral and feet off the pedals, our team member will spray any areas needing some extra love. This specialty-formulated spray is only meant for stubborn bug splats and stains – and it doesn’t require scrubbing as it eats away grime, rather than brushing it in.

During the Wash

This is where the fun begins! Please take a moment to yourself, relax, and let our state-of-the-art technology do the work. Near the end of your wash, you will see a red light, signaling the drying process. Once the light turns green, you are ready to head to one of our detailing stations. Just take your car out of neutral and drive right out of the tunnel.

After the Wash

It’s all in the details, and that’s one area we specialize in here at Caliber. When you park at one of our detailing stations, get excited for freebies unlike you’ve ever seen at other washes. Your wash includes the use of all our detailing tools, including our powerful vacuums, detailing air (compressed air that is great for those hard-to-reach areas), glass cleaner, multi-purpose cleaner, and an automatic carpet mat cleaner. And perhaps our most popular freebie is the air freshener, which fits great under a seat or near a vent for optimal scent distribution.

Our team regularly checks these detailing areas to refill towels, cleaners, and all our detailing freebies – but if your station is ever out, please don’t hesitate to let us know. We don’t want you to miss out on any tool! Please also feel free to stop us and ask questions if you’re looking for tips on how to use our tools to get that interior shine.

Once you’re done detailing your vehicle, we hope you’ll pull out with that perfect shine. Feel free to show it off by using the hashtag #caliberclean – and let us know if we can answer any questions!

8 Tips To Protect Your Car During Cold Weather

No matter what part of the country you live in, winter weather can wreak havoc on your car. Even if temperatures don’t hit freezing, it’s important to make sure your car is protected during the cold winter months. Taking the right precautions could save you from hefty bills or accidents in the future. These tips will keep your car rolling smoothly and looking good through the cold.

  1. Wash Your Car Regularly

Winter weather can be tough on our car. Road salt, dirt, and water can leave unwanted marks. Salt and debris can stick to your car during chilly temperatures, leaving impurities and harmful deposits behind. This is why it’s important to get into the habit of washing your car regularly during colder months. Prevention is better than a cure, and if you regularly wash your car while it’s cold, you are preventing any future paint damage or other issues with the exterior. Also, consider maintaining your ceramic coating to prevent irritants from seeping into your paint job.

2. Keep Your Car Protected

When the weather turns cold, it’s time to add an extra layer of protection between your car and unwanted debris. Caliber Car Wash has a free “Caliber Ceramic Coating” technology that can extend your car’s paint job by making it more resistant to harmful elements. In the winter, that can mean ice, salt, road buildup, and more. Left untreated, winter grime can lead to rust or corrosion in areas that are difficult to spot.

3. Remember Your Interior

It can be easy to forget the inside of your vehicle, especially when the temperatures drop to freezing. However, it’s equally as important to pay attention to the inside of your car! Excess dirt and water can get trapped inside and cause issues with stubborn stains or even mold. Consider trying express mat cleaners, available for free at Caliber, that can keep your mats looking fresh in just a few seconds. Caliber also offers free vacuums and detailing air with all wash packages to help you get debris out of hard-to-reach places.

4. Keep Up with Regularly Scheduled Maintenance

This is one of the most basic, yet most important, aspects of keeping your car protected during cold weather. Skipping your routine oil change and check-up could mean an expensive bill down the road. You’ve most likely already invested thousands of dollars into your vehicle, so it’s important to maintain it properly. Routine checks extend the life of your vehicle and reduce repair costs in the future. This will also keep your car in top condition and increase safety during the winter months.

5. Check Your Battery

Avoid the dreaded feeling of a dead car battery by being proactive. A fully charged battery in good condition is a must during the winter months. The cold can put more stress on your battery, especially if you park outside or leave your car outside for long periods of time. Head to a local repair shop and test out your battery and make sure it’s in good shape. You never want to worry about being stranded on a frozen road with a car that won’t start.

6. Create a Survival Kit

Emergencies can happen to anyone. The important thing is that you are prepared with a car “survival kit” that will make sure you have anything you need if an emergency happens. The things you can add to your survival kit include blankets, a flashlight, batteries, an ice scraper, bottled water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and road flares.

7. Test Your Lights and Windshield Wipers

When temperatures drop, that means there is less daylight- especially on your commute home. This means you want to do everything you can to make sure your lights are working correctly. If a bulb is out or foggy, consider getting it replaced. Windshield wipers are also extremely important in chilly temperatures. Snow, rain, and fog can decrease visibility tremendously, so it’s essential to test them before heading out on the road.

8. Make sure your tires are in good condition

If you live in an area that gets snow or ice during the winter, it might be time to consider winter tires. Winter tires can provide improved traction, keeping you from spinning out in snow or ice. If you want to keep your regular tires year-round, it’s crucial to stay on top of your tire pressure. Tire pressure can drop with the temperature. This is because the air inside the tire condenses when it’s cold, taking up less space. Driving around with low tire pressure could cause premature wear, increased stopping time, and poor fuel economy.

If you need any tips or tricks on how to keep your car clean during the winter, feel free to stop by one of our locations and our Caliber staff will explain which wash is best for your vehicle and answer any questions you have on our detailing tools.

Can Automatic Car Washes Damage My Car?

Keeping your car looking and feeling new is the number one way to preserve the value and length of its lifespan. Without washing and waxing your car, the paint will corrode quickly; and the older your vehicle is, the quicker the corrosion. Sun, rain, and almost every other weather condition can be harmful to your car’s paint. The best way to prevent this from happening is to wash and wax your vehicle regularly.

Ultimately, any hard object (including hard, old brushes) that creates friction with your car will contribute to future damage. However, any potential damage from a well-run car wash is far less significant than not washing it at all (that’s why it is important to visit the right type of wash). Depending on your location, dirt, acid rain, sap, salt, mud, or other contaminants will bind with the metal under the paint causing your paint to slowly fade until finally rusting away. Shortly put, washing your car avoids more damage than the alternative.

The key to preventing environmental damage is washing your car at least twice a month and even more if you live in an area with dirt roads, salty air, or somewhere they use salt on the highways.

Can Automatic Car Washes Damage My Car?

The type of car wash that you go to plays a large role in your vehicle’s longevity. For example, washes that have bristle brushes and hard water can potentially leave your car with scratches and water stains. Contrarily, a wash that uses cloth brushes and soft water (also known as distilled water) is more likely to leave your car with a flawless shine.

Features inside the tunnel of a car wash can vary greatly. Although you may pay a little more, the added benefits will prolong the life of your vehicle’s paint. Those features may include wax, ceramic coating, rain guard or paint protectant. These features are meant to create a coating over all the surfaces of your car’s exterior that is water resistant and protects against minor scratches and environmental contaminants. Meanwhile, the ceramic coating will bind with your car’s paint and creates a bond that increases its durability.

In cases of automatic car washes, you get what you pay for and the few extra dollars will go a long way in preserving your car’s exterior and keeping vents clean. That’s one reason why we specialize in soft water and brushes, with a side of extra protectant coating. For more information, stop by today.

Caliber Car Wash Launches “Triple C” Coating for Better Paint Protection and Shine

Industry-leading technology added at no additional cost to customers

Caliber Car Wash today announced the launch of its new product, Caliber Ceramic Coating (Triple C), a technology that extends a car’s paint job by making it more resistant to harmful elements.

Ceramic coating is a newer express car wash innovation that, on average, costs an additional $10-30 per wash due to its ability to fill microscopic holes in a vehicle’s paint job to create a protective clear coat layer. Caliber is proud to offer the upgrade at no additional cost to its top “Caliber” package.

“We’re excited to expand our product offering with the addition of Caliber Ceramic Coating,” said Caliber spokesperson Mac McCall who noted that the upgrade is especially meaningful for long-term car care. “When your car gets small scratches or gets stuck under a bird at an inopportune moment, your vehicle will have a new layer of protection before these contaminants have the opportunity to reach your paint. You’ll start to see a clear difference after just a few applications as your car will shine like it just left the dealer’s lot.”

Ceramic technology has recently received national attention for its use in phones and pans. By utilizing the non-metallic material, car washes are able to coat cars with small molecules that create tight covalent bonds forming a hydrophobic shield to make it resistant to natural elements like acid rain, UV rays and bird droppings. It does so by making contaminants bead up and slide off the vehicle’s slick coating.

Caliber’s three-step ceramic process begins at the front of the wash tunnel with a specialty cleaner to ensure no contaminants are sealed in during the wash and to flatten soap bubbles for a better clean and wax adhesion. Cars are then treated to underbody washes, triple foam and other cleaners before receiving step two, which includes a leveling agent to fill in any small paint imperfections. This is where the ceramic coating is applied for protection and extra shine. The last step of the Triple C process includes a drying agent to give the coating its hydrophobic properties, meaning that elements like water will more easily bead up and slip off the coating to help prevent damage.

“Caliber believes in giving customers their best vehicle shine,” McCall said. “That’s one reason why we continue to look at ways to improve our washes – and doing so at no additional cost whenever possible.”

Due to its additional protective attributes, Caliber Ceramic Coating will last longer than just using traditional waxes; however, motorists should still have coatings regularly applied to enhance shine and fill any holes that develop in the coating. That’s one reason why Caliber recommends Limitless wash plans that allow customers to maintain their coating all month long for one low price.

McCall also mentioned that, for a limited time, new customers can take $10 off their first month of Limitless Caliber washes in order to refresh their vehicle’s cleanliness and coating more regularly.

Vehicles at all of Caliber’s locations will have access to Triple C starting December 1, 2020. And, the first 200 new and existing Limitless members to try the new product the following weekend (December 5-6, 2020) will receive a specialty air freshener to celebrate the technology’s launch.

Meet the Team: Marquise

One of our favorite parts about operating a car wash is the opportunity to work with people, and it is no surprise to hear that team member Marquise feels the same.

Marquise is known for his customer service at our Mableton, Georgia location, and he goes above and beyond to help customers and community members. In fact, when asked why he loves living in the Atlanta metro area, his answer was “the people!”

This Sugar Factory-loving team member stopped by the blog today to share his favorite detailing tip because he knows that spills happen. That’s why he suggests that you “should always keep a detailing cloth in your car for cleaning or spills.”

And if you’re ever in a bind after a spill, feel free to stop by our Mableton location because we provide towels, cleaners, and vacuums free with every wash. Just ask for Marquise, and he can walk you through all our detailing freebies or help you set up a Limitless wash plan, so you never need to worry about messes and spills again!

Meet the Team: Justin

One of Caliber’s first employees and managers, Justin, recently moved from Ocala to manage our new Fort Walton Beach wash.

This Altha, Florida native, is excited to return to the panhandle as he’ll be closer to family and wanted to provide his son Bass a chance to grow up near the beach. He and his wife also look forward to having their son experience the Gulf Breeze Zoo and the Gularium.

“I am happy to be a part of this new community and to be surrounded by all the amazing men and women of the armed forces that call this area home right now,” Justin said. “I grew up going to air shows at Tyndall, and can’t wait to take my son to his first air show locally!”

Justin thrives on customer service and clean cars. Known for going the extra mile, Justin also loves to share tips on how to get that clean car feel. One of his favorites is to grab a free air freshener (located at each vacuum stall) and fold it in half, so it sits in the middle of the air vent. That way, you’ll get a “constant breeze of that new car smell!”

When he’s not working at the wash, Justin also likes to play golf a couple of times a month when possible. Classifying himself as “not good or terrible,” Justin loves golf because it is his “fortress of solitude” to clear his head.

Golf time may be put on hold for a bit though, because Caliber is open rain and shine, and Justin is doing all he can to welcome new customers.

Justin and the rest of the new Fort Walton Beach team looks forward to offering $10 off your first month of Limitless washes and providing military discounts to local service members.

Meet The Team: Eduardo

If you love attractions like Six Flags and World of Coke, you’re not alone. Caliber team member Eduardo loves Atlanta because there are always things to do, including visiting local sites like the Aquarium and Centennial Olympic Park.

Eduardo is an expert guide at our Mableton tunnel, and his favorite car wash tip is to remember to remove leaves and debris from your windshield and trunk area to ensure your car leaves with a showroom shine.

And for those with truck beds, this is especially important as items not bolted down can fly out and potentially damage your vehicle or those behind or in front of you. Or, in the case of softer debris like leaves, cover the next car as it flies out.

So stop by today to meet Eduardo and learn how to maintain that new car shine!
